Last Wednesday we celebrated a construction milestone for Erith Primary School. Led by Council Leader Teresa O’Neil OBE, the topping out ceremony saw the last concrete being poured into the structure of the new facility.

The school sits within Erith Quarry in Bexley, south-east London, a site that had long been considered unsuitable for development. As masterplanners, architects and landscape architects, working in partnership with developers Anderson and L&Q, we designed a whole new neighbourhood, which includes the school, 650 new homes and a new ecological park. The school – which wasn’t part of the original brief – sits at the highest, most prominent point of Erith Quarry and becomes the focal point of the emerging community.

The school’s pure circular footprint is embedded into the landscape, elevated above terraced communal spaces. The circular shape maximises natural daylight and ventilation, and provides flexibility of space that will allow a wide curriculum of teaching areas, multipurpose halls, and a music and drama studio. It also provides space for a central, external courtyard, which creates a secure sanctuary for both play and outdoor learning.

The school building is designed with concrete, timber and glass as the principle materials. These have a strong relationship with the historic context of the quarry and the existing woodland, ensuring that it blends in comfortably with its setting, and provide 360-degree views out across the landscape.

“The topping out ceremony at the Erith Quarry school really brought home how iconic the school will be and how lucky the future pupils will be – a real investment in the future of our borough and we’re proud that the Council helped make it happen.””
Cllr Teresa O’Neill Leader of Bexley Council

The school will open its doors to students in 2022, and be ran by the Woodland Academy Trust, which governs seven schools in Bexley. It will cater to up to 650 pupils from nursery up to year six.

The scheme is being delivered by L&Q and Anderson.
