This transformational scheme received the green light at a Strategic Planning Committee meeting last week.

Lewisham Council has approved the studio's hybrid planning application for New Bermondsey. This marks the beginning of a significant and positive transformation for the area. With placemaking at the heart of our proposals, New Bermondsey will be a health and well-being oriented mixed-use neighbourhood.

Our design vision is anchored by a unique, multi-layered landscape inspired by the network of railway viaducts, embankments and landforms that give character to this area. Improved transport connections, as well as pedestrian and cycle-friendly routes, are animated by sports, culture, retail and employment spaces that blend seamlessly into the public realm. This provides an opportunity to reimagine this site as a vibrant and attractive place to live, work and play in.

The proposals for New Bermondsey will transform an underused industrial area into a neighbourhood with 3,500 new homes, a new Overground station and sports facilities for the community, plus the creation of up to 1,250 new jobs on completion. As well as delivering much needed new homes for the London Borough of Lewisham, the scheme will also enable Millwall FC to bring forward their own vision for the land surrounding the football stadium in the future.

Our client, Renewal, the developer of the site, owns the vast majority of the developable land and has spent the past sixteen years assembling the site and developing a vision and strategy for this scheme.

Together, our proposals take into careful consideration the industrial heritage and unique character of the area, and include:

  • Much needed new homes including affordable homes
  • Opening up the site and providing new public realm
  • Improved connections and a new station
  • A new state-of-the-art indoor sports complex for Lewisham and south London
  • A thriving local economy and new job opportunities

We welcome the decision made by Lewisham Council’s Planning Committee to secure a resolution to grant planning consent for the planning application for New Bermondsey, for outline elements of the entire masterplan and the detailed design of Phase 1. These proposals will transform an underused industrial area into a new part of London with 3,500 homes, enabling the proposed new Overground station, and providing new sports facilities for the community, plus the creation of up to 1,250 new jobs on completion. They will also enable Millwall FC to bring forward their own vision for the land surrounding the stadium in the future. The next step is for the GLA to consider the application, and we will work with officers to finalise the necessary legal agreements.”
