SEW are the Lead Architect and Landscape Architect for the refurbishment of Balfron Tower, the Grade II* listed brutalist icon in Poplar, East London. Guided by Goldfinger’s original vision, we’ve worked with Historic England and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to bring the tower into the twenty-first century. Our approach has been one of ‘constructive conservation’ and of respect for the Brutalist aesthetics. We are also overseeing Balfron Tower's delivery, with construction due to complete in spring 2020.
In Kidbrooke, South London, SEW worked as Design Architects and Landscape Architects for the Detailed Design of Birch House. The scheme – which is on site and nearing completion - is the beacon for one of London’s most significant new housing-led developments The 21-storey tower acts as a visual maker for the village centre, and is designed to foster a vertical community through the provision of well-orientated and well-distributed common areas: a triple-height ground floor lobby and mezzanine workspace; a landscaped outdoor play terrace; and a sky garden comprising of a flexible dining/ yoga/workspace and soft-landscaped terrace featuring birch trees.
