The project focused on addressing social deprivation in Moulsecoomb by prioritising regeneration and employment. In the strategic planning stage, the establishment of FIELD, a temporary startup space developed in partnership with U+I and the University of Brighton, laid the foundation for long-term social impact by supporting small businesses and shifting local perceptions of the place. During the design and implementation stage, the Plus X Innovation Hub, designed by Studio Egret West with the University of Brighton input through BRITE (a joint venture supporting local businesses), became a community anchor, integrating workspace innovation with engagement through features like a café, workshops, and event spaces. This inclusive design fostered collaboration, enabling residents like Dave and Jack to grow their businesses and benefit the neighbourhood. In the operational stage, Plus X supports tech and product entrepreneurs with cutting-edge facilities and a collaborative environment, driving innovation, business growth, and improved employment outcomes.

“From my beginnings at FIELD (est. 2016), which eventually evolved into Plus X, my journey has been nothing short of transformative. As one of the original members of FIELD, I collaborated with like-minded innovators and helped shape the space and its ethos. With the transition to Plus X, I’ve continued to thrive, benefiting from the seamless continuation of our work and the enhanced resources available. Plus X has provided an environment that supports the entire product development process, from concept to completion. The dynamic community and state-of-the-art facilities have been instrumental in my work, particularly in developing and refining over 260 products. Spaces like these are not only important—they are essential for driving forward-thinking and impactful innovation.””—Dave Lock Business Operator at Plus X Innovation, Studio 01
