For the Mayfield Phase 1 development, we facilitated a joint workshop with Landsec U&I with Regeneration Brainery, a charity that helps young people kickstart careers in regeneration and development. The workshop, held at Manchester Depot adjacent to Mayfield Park, addressed the public realm challenges that currently hinder a welcoming connection between Manchester Piccadilly Station and Mayfield Park. The goal was to reimagine opportunities for creating a safe, engaging, and clear connection between the station, the park, and beyond.
Together, we visited the park and explored key sites along the threshold. The young participants showed great interest in the challenges and contributed meaningfully to a lively discussion. The workshop covered a wide range of design solutions—both temporary and permanent—ranging from the importance of clear wayfinding, to the environmental and human benefits of sensitive landscape and planting interventions, lighting design, and art installations.
The outcome of this workshop was vibrant, full of energy, and truly inspiring for the next phase of the design process. The young participants generated a variety of innovative ideas, which we will incorporate into the public realm design.
