Following on from the unanimous planning approval for the Bow Common Gasworks masterplan, the London Borough of Tower Hamlets has given planning approval for Bow Common Gasworks Phase 1.

Working as the architects for client St James and St William, our scheme transforms a brownfield site into a new accessible place in a landscape-first design approach, allowing the wider community to reconnect with grounds that had been closed to the public for over 150 years.

This first phase of the masterplan will activate the former gas works site's western corner, drawing pedestrians from the surrounding neighbourhoods into a series of public spaces: Bow Yard, Maple Mews and Grove Gardens, and the new public park, Bow Common. Anchoring Bow Yard will be the newly restored 120 Bow Common Lane, the former gasworks office and laboratories, brought back into life having been derelict for decades. Adjacent to Bow Yard will be a new square leading to a collection of 312 new homes and resident gardens, hosted in a uniquely composed series of buildings made playful through a series of staggered balconies, ribbed and rotated brick textures, and contrasting metal panelling. Work on site is underway and plans for the next phases continue.
