We have designed Central Barangaroo to speak with a powerful civic purpose. Our design is centred on the people of Sydney – how they’ll live, play, experience and come together. How they do this today, and how they might do this tomorrow.
Re-imagining Barangaroo is part of a once-in-ageneration story. It’s one that is intimately connected with Sydney’s people: how they’ll work, play and experience their new neighbourhood on the harbour’s western waterfront.
Barangaroo will become a global reference point for urban regeneration, design excellence and sustainability. It will be representative of the fine balance that Sydney has achieved between celebrating its cityscape and landscape – which makes it amongst the world’s most liveable cities.
Studio Egret West were inspired by Sydney – captivated by the beauty of the landscape; the curves, forms and headlands of Sydney Harbour; the social, cosmopolitan outdoor lifestyle; and the city’s unique urban character.
The masterplan and architectural approach understands that Central Barangaroo must be about Sydney, and the wider Barangaroo story: restoring life to Sydney’s harbour foreshore. We recognise how essential the responsive urban design and diversity of architecture will be to the success of Barangaroo, in creating the connections – social, physical and psychological – that will ensure Central Barangaroo, and the precinct as a whole, is a successful place – locally loved and globally recognised.
Our design works hard to balance the needs of creating a distinct, unique and characterful precinct at Barangaroo, with the need for it to become the ‘final piece’ of a vital Sydney neighbourhood. Our design creates a living, breathing neighbourhood where the design and mix of uses has been chosen to allow a transition from cosmopolitan intensity at the south of the site, through to a cultural and events focus and outdoor living at the northern end of the site. The site is connected by parkland, the generous and integrated Sydney Steps, the laneways and vibrant cultural and retail experiences.
