The Brew Brick has been featured in the Architects’ Journal (AJ), as part of their 'Material Changes' Series - highlighting groundbreaking approaches to circular construction, building materials and recycling. Richard Waite speaks to architect Harry Henderson about using waste coffee to create a lighter and lower-carbon brick.

What happens when morning coffee waste meets traditional brickmaking? The Architects’ Journal (AJ) explores exactly that in their latest feature on circular construction, highlighting Studio Egret West’s innovative "Brew Brick."

In an interview with the AJ’s Richard Waite, architect Harry Henderson unpacks the journey of the material, developed in collaboration with York Handmade.

The feature tracks the material's real-world application, starting with the Brew House pavilion at Clerkenwell Design Week. Constructed from 700 Brew Bricks - utilising 300kg of spent grounds collected from local cafés in bright yellow wheelie bins.

The article highlights the project’s truly circular lifecycle. Following CDW, the pavilion was carefully dismantled and the bricks were given a permanent second life, forming the bar of a café in Pimlico.
