I have always loved creating places with a strong narrative, where you immediately understand the building at first glance. For me, Carpenter’s Wharf was one of those places. The building is located on Fish Island in Hackney Wick, and faces a small canal overlooking Olympic Park. I think what resonated with me in this project was its strong connection to its surroundings and the sites industrial history. Being from Norway I naturally love anything made out of timber and of course anything that has a connection to the water, so I quickly fell in love with this place.

My favourite thing to do is to use my personal experience from my travels and incorporate them into design. When I worked on Carpenter’s Wharf I had the pleasure of designing an atrium feature within the lift lobby. The feature spanned 20 meters high and was composed out of rough timber battens. The design was inspired by waterfalls, something I am very familiar with being Norwegian.

I think one of the things we at Studio Egret West pride ourselves with is to have Architects from many different cultural and national backgrounds, and this was one of the first things I noticed walking into the Studio. I think this diversity reveals itself in the places we help create and is one of the key components to our unique design.
